History:

Zouaves were among the most colourful and recognisable troops of the American Civil War, inspired by French colonial units in North Africa. Known for their exotic dressfeaturing short open jackets, sashes, baggy trousers, and fezzes or turbansZouave regiments served on both Union and Confederate sides. Notable units included the Unions 5th and 10th New York, and the Confederate Louisiana Tigers. While their uniforms stood out, these regiments also developed a fierce reputation for bravery and aggressive fighting. Zouaves often participated in key battles from First Bull Run to Gettysburg, and their unique appearance made them popular in wartime illustrations and public imagination.
