History:

The Admiral Graf Spee was the third of the Deutschland-class heavy cruisers, built to combine speed, armament, and range for commerce raiding. Early in World War II, it conducted operations in the South Atlantic, sinking merchant ships before facing British forces at the Battle of the River Plate in December 1939. Damaged and unable to escape, Captain Hans Langsdorff ordered the ship scuttled outside Montevideo, Uruguay, to avoid capture. The episode remains one of the most dramatic naval stories of the war.
