History

The Boeing F/A-18F Super Hornet entered service in 1999 as the upgraded successor to the original Hornet, offering greater range, payload, and avionics. Operated by both the US Navy and Marine Corps, it quickly became the backbone of carrier air wings. VFA-154 “Black Knights” is a long-standing US Navy strike fighter squadron, known for its distinctive black tail markings and carrier deployments, including aboard USS Nimitz. VFA-11 “Red Rippers,” another historic squadron, has flown combat missions across multiple conflicts, including in the Middle East. The Super Hornet continues to play a vital role in modern naval operations, combining air superiority with ground-attack capability, and remains central to US naval aviation strategy in the 21st century.
