History: Developed in the late 1980s, the Type 90 is Japan’s first indigenous third-generation main battle tank, designed to replace the ageing Type 61 and Type 74 tanks. Equipped with a 120mm smoothbore gun (licensed from Rheinmetall), advanced fire-control systems, and composite armour, the Type 90 offered cutting-edge technology for its time. Despite limited production due to cost, the Type 90 remains in service with the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, primarily deployed in Hokkaido to counter potential threats from armoured incursions. Its legacy continues with the more recent Type 10 tank, which builds upon the foundations of the Type 90’s advanced design.
