  • Perfect for ship modelling and maritime dioramas
  • Ideal for showcasing 19th-century seafaring history

History:

New Bedford, Massachusetts, was once known as the “Whaling Capital of the World,” with its ships sailing to distant oceans in search of whales. The whalers of the early 19th century, such as this vessel from around 1835, were designed for long voyages, carrying supplies for years at sea. Crews pursued whales primarily for their oil, which was rendered from blubber and became a vital commodity. These ships were ruggedly built, featuring strong wooden hulls, full rigging, and specialized equipment for processing whales. The legacy of the New Bedford whalers remains an important part of American maritime history.
