History
The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was one of the most versatile and recognisable American fighters of World War II. Its twin-boom design and central nacelle housed powerful armament, giving it excellent firepower and range. The P-38F variant entered service in the early 1940s, performing roles from bomber escort to ground attack across multiple theatres. “Glacier Girl”, serial number 41-7630, was part of Operation Bolero, the U.S. effort to ferry aircraft across the Atlantic to Europe in 1942. Forced to land on the Greenland icecap due to poor weather, the aircraft was entombed in ice for fifty years before being recovered and painstakingly restored to flying condition in the 1990s. Today, “Glacier Girl” symbolises both the resilience of WWII aviation and the dedication of aircraft preservationists.
