Academy F/A-18F Super Hornet 1/48 Scale Model Kit
The Academy 1/48 scale F/A-18F Super Hornet recreates the two-seat version of the US Navy’s carrier-capable multirole strike fighter. Featuring new tooling, this plastic model kit offers several assembly options, including folding wings, adjustable flaps and a canopy that can be displayed open or closed.
Developed from the earlier F/A-18 Hornet family, the Super Hornet is a larger aircraft with increased fuel capacity, range and payload. Entering US Navy service in the late 1990s, it was designed to undertake a wide variety of operations, including air superiority, fleet defence, ground attack, reconnaissance and aerial refuelling.
The F/A-18F features two cockpits with full combat capability, allowing the second crew member to manage weapons, sensors and mission systems during demanding operations. This arrangement distinguishes the F-model from the single-seat Super Hornet and makes the tandem cockpit an important feature of the finished model.
Model Features
Academy’s new-tool kit includes several options for displaying the aircraft in different configurations. The folding wing option is particularly relevant to the Super Hornet’s carrier-based role, while the adjustable flaps allow further variation in the completed model.

US Navy Marking Options
Two marking schemes are provided, representing operational F/A-18F Super Hornets from different US Navy squadrons during 2024.
- VFA-103 “Jolly Rogers”: F/A-18F Super Hornet aboard USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78), September 2024.
- VFA-213 “Black Lions”: F/A-18F Super Hornet returning to Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia, January 2024.
These alternatives allow the model to be finished in either Jolly Rogers or Black Lions squadron markings, with the included spray mask assisting during painting.
Assembly and Finishing
This is a 1/48 scale plastic model kit requiring assembly, painting and glue. The canopy, wings and flaps can be configured during construction to suit the chosen presentation.
Two pilot figures are supplied for the cockpit, and the choice of squadron markings allows the completed aircraft to represent either of the two 2024 US Navy examples.
