History

The Volkswagen Iltis was developed in the late 1970s as a lightweight, all terrain military vehicle, most notably adopted by the German Bundeswehr. Designed for mobility and reliability rather than heavy protection, the Iltis proved capable in a wide range of environments, from European road networks to rough off road conditions.

One of its more specialised roles was carrying anti tank weapons such as the MILAN missile system. MILAN, a wire guided anti tank missile developed jointly by France and Germany, became a standard infantry and vehicle mounted weapon throughout NATO during the Cold War. Mounted on light vehicles like the Iltis, it provided mobile anti armour capability without the need for heavier tracked platforms.

This combination reflects the tactical thinking of the period, prioritising flexibility and rapid deployment, and makes the Iltis MILAN an interesting snapshot of late Cold War military doctrine.
