Airfix Douglas Dauntless SBD-3/5 1/72 Model Kit

Build one of the most important American naval aircraft of the Second World War with the Airfix Douglas Dauntless SBD-3/5 in 1/72 scale. Part of the Vintage Classics collection, this 51-part plastic model kit recreates the carrier-based dive bomber and reconnaissance aircraft that became a major threat to the Imperial Japanese Navy during the Pacific conflict.

The completed model has a wingspan of 175mm and comes with two authentic paint schemes. Rated at skill level 2 and suitable for modellers aged 8 years and above, it offers an approachable project based on an aircraft with a remarkable wartime record.

Douglas SBD Dauntless Dive Bomber

SBD stood for Scout Bomber Douglas, reflecting the aircraft’s intended roles as both a reconnaissance aircraft and carrier-based dive bomber. Despite its relatively conventional appearance, the Dauntless became one of the US Navy’s most effective aircraft during the early Pacific War.

Its most famous action came during the Battle of Midway in June 1942, when SBD dive bombers operating from USS Enterprise, USS Yorktown and USS Hornet sank four Japanese aircraft carriers: Akagi, Kaga, Soryu and Hiryu. This action had a major impact on the course of the Pacific War.

SBD-3 and SBD-5 Variants

The SBD-3 entered service in 1941 and incorporated improved crew armour and self-sealing fuel tanks. The later SBD-5, introduced in 1943, used a more powerful 1,200 horsepower Wright R-1820-60 engine to improve altitude performance.

Both variants served extensively in the Pacific from aircraft carriers and island bases. The Dauntless earned a reputation for accurate dive bombing, sturdy construction and dependable handling, remaining in frontline service until 1944.
