Three Aircraft from Douglas Bader’s Career

The Bristol Bulldog represents Bader’s early RAF service after he was commissioned in July 1930 and posted to No.23 Squadron at Kenley. The Bulldog also became closely linked with a major turning point in his life after his flying accident on 14 December 1931.

Despite losing both legs following the crash, Bader remained determined to return to flying. With the outbreak of the Second World War, he rejoined the Royal Air Force and went on to fly both the Hawker Hurricane and Supermarine Spitfire in combat. He achieved 22 aerial victories before becoming a prisoner of war on 9 August 1941 after being forced to leave his Spitfire over France.

At the end of the war, Bader again flew a Spitfire when he led the victory flypast over London, bringing his association with these aircraft full circle.
