History
The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom was one of the most successful jet aircraft of the post war era, serving with numerous air arms around the world. Britain became a major operator of the type, acquiring the Phantom to modernise both Royal Navy and Royal Air Force fast jet capabilities.
The Phantom FG.1 was purchased to replace the ageing De Havilland Sea Vixen in Fleet Air Arm service. Its primary role was fleet air defence in all weather conditions, with a secondary strike capability that added considerable flexibility. The aircraft’s size, speed and power made it an impressive sight aboard Royal Navy carriers.
Operating the Phantom from the relatively small deck of HMS Ark Royal required extensive modifications to both the aircraft and the carrier itself. Only the most capable fast jet pilots were selected to fly the FG.1, and its combination of performance and aesthetics has ensured its lasting reputation as one of the most attractive and respected aircraft ever to serve with Britain’s armed forces.
