Airfix Eurofighter Typhoon FGR.4 GINA & Hawker Hurricane Mk.I

Typhoon FGR.4 GINA Battle of Britain Tribute

In 2015, as the UK commemorated the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, a Eurofighter Typhoon FGR.4 at RAF Coningsby received a distinctive camouflage scheme inspired by the Hawker Hurricane Mk.I flown by Flight Lieutenant James Brindley Nicolson of No.249 Squadron.

Nicolson was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions on 16 August 1940. After his Hurricane was set on fire during combat, he continued an attack on an enemy aircraft before eventually leaving his burning fighter. His award was the only Victoria Cross presented to a Fighter Command pilot during the war.

The commemorative Typhoon became widely known as “GINA”, taken from its fuselage code letters, and its Battle of Britain-style camouflage created a striking connection between the RAF’s modern fighter force and the aircraft of 1940.
