History
The Yakovlev Yak-1 was one of the Soviet Union’s most important fighter aircraft during the Second World War and formed the foundation for a large family of successful Yak fighters. Designed as a lightweight and manoeuvrable interceptor, the Yak-1 entered combat during the early stages of the German invasion of the Soviet Union.
The Yak-1B was an improved version featuring better cockpit visibility, refined armament arrangements, and various aerodynamic changes aimed at improving combat effectiveness. Soviet pilots valued the aircraft for its agility, strong low-altitude performance, and relatively simple maintenance requirements.
Yak fighters became heavily involved on the Eastern Front and were flown by many of the Soviet Union’s leading aces. The aircraft proved highly effective in close-range combat and remained competitive against contemporary German fighters throughout much of the war.
The Yak-1B played an important role in the development of later Yakovlev fighters and remains one of the most recognisable Soviet combat aircraft of the Second World War.
