History

British pilots during World War I served in both the Royal Flying Corps and, from April 1918, the newly formed Royal Air Force. They undertook a variety of roles, from reconnaissance and artillery observation to air combat and ground attack. Operating in open cockpit aircraft such as the Sopwith Camel, SE.5a, and Bristol F.2 Fighter, they faced extreme cold, physical strain, and the constant threat of enemy action. The typical pilot’s attire included leather flying coats, wool-lined boots, gloves, goggles, and scarves — both for warmth and to protect against the elements.
