Vickers-Clyno Mark IV, 1915

The Copper State Models Vickers-Clyno Mark IV captures one of the most distinctive military motorcycle combinations used during the First World War. Designed in 1/35 scale, this kit represents a British Army sidecar outfit equipped with a Vickers machine gun, a configuration that provided mobile firepower and rapid deployment across the battlefield.

The kit includes highly detailed components together with 3D printed parts that help reproduce many of the finer details found on the original machine. Some 3D printed components may be supplied pre-cleaned, reducing preparation work before assembly. Cartograf decals are included, providing crisp markings and excellent print quality for the finished model.

The Vickers-Clyno combination was far more than a simple motorcycle and sidecar. These machines formed part of dedicated machine gun sections where multiple outfits operated together. One machine carried the gun, another transported additional ammunition, while a third acted as a reserve vehicle. This arrangement allowed units to maintain mobility even under difficult battlefield conditions.

History

Clyno was one of the principal suppliers of military motorcycles to the British Army during the First World War. While many motorcycles were used for dispatch riding and communications duties, specialised sidecar combinations were developed to carry the Vickers machine gun and its supporting equipment. These outfits provided a level of mobility that traditional machine gun teams could not match, allowing weapons and ammunition to be moved quickly between positions.

Each Vickers-Clyno outfit carried not only the machine gun but also ammunition, cooling water, spare parts and fuel. They typically operated as part of a three-vehicle section, ensuring that firepower could be maintained even if one motorcycle became disabled. By the end of the war, the British armed forces operated thousands of Clyno motorcycles both at home and overseas, with large numbers serving on the Western Front in France. The company also supplied motorcycles to Russia under wartime contracts, making the Clyno one of the most widely used military motorcycle types of the era.
