History
The Lafayette Escadrille was a unit of the French Air Service composed mainly of American volunteer pilots during World War I. Formed in 1916, the squadron became famous for its daring missions and distinctive insignia, often featuring a Native American chief’s head. Flying nimble fighters like the Nieuport 17, these pilots engaged in dogfights over the Western Front and played a key role in bolstering French and Allied morale. Many members later transferred to the United States Army Air Service, helping to lay the foundation for future American military aviation.
