History
The de Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver is one of the most successful utility aircraft ever produced. First introduced in the late 1940s, it was designed specifically for operations in remote and rugged environments where reliability and short take-off and landing performance were essential.
The AL.1 designation refers to the aircraft’s service with the British Army, where it was used primarily for liaison, reconnaissance, and light transport duties. Its ability to operate from short, unprepared airstrips made it highly valuable in a variety of operational conditions.
The Beaver’s simple and robust design, combined with its powerful radial engine, allowed it to carry useful loads into areas that were otherwise difficult to access. It quickly gained a reputation for dependability and versatility.
Even beyond military use, the Beaver became a staple of bush flying around the world, remaining in service for decades. Its legacy continues today as one of the most recognisable and respected utility aircraft designs.
