History:
During the Vietnam War and into the decades that followed, motor tricycles—locally referred to as “xe lam” or “cyclo-motors”—were a common mode of urban transport in cities like Saigon. These three-wheeled vehicles, often homemade or heavily modified, served as taxis, delivery vehicles, and everyday commuter transport for locals navigating the busy streets of South Vietnam.
Lightweight and versatile, the motor tricycle became a symbol of resilience and ingenuity. They were inexpensive to run, could manoeuvre through narrow alleyways, and provided livelihoods for thousands of drivers. Often built from recycled motorcycle parts and featuring canopy roofs, these trikes could carry multiple passengers and modest cargo loads. In the chaotic backdrop of war, they represented a sliver of civilian life continuing amidst conflict.
