Hasegawa Plastic Model Kit

1978 Lotus 79 German GP Detail Version (1/20) 52298

This 1/20 scale Detail Version kit from Hasegawa recreates the iconic 1978 Lotus 79 as raced at the German Grand Prix. Known for its groundbreaking ground-effect aerodynamics, the Lotus 79 is one of the most significant Formula One cars ever built, and this kit enhances the standard release with additional precision components.

The model includes photo-etched metal parts for improved realism, including a pressed metal mesh funnel cover, sliding skirts, radiator mesh, and detailed brake discs. Seat belts are represented with cloth-style material for a more authentic appearance. Additional plastic parts include a 1970s style racing helmet, allowing for a period-correct display. A template for painting the tyre logo markings is also provided.

With approximately 159 parts, the finished model measures 221mm in length and 108mm in width, capturing the sleek, low-profile design that defined the Lotus 79’s dominance during the 1978 season.

History

The Lotus 79 revolutionised Formula One with its full exploitation of ground-effect aerodynamics. Designed by Colin Chapman and his team, the car channelled airflow beneath the chassis to generate immense downforce, dramatically improving cornering performance.

During the 1978 season, the Lotus 79 dominated the championship. At the German Grand Prix, Mario Andretti secured victory in car number 5, while teammate Ronnie Peterson competed in car number 6. The success of the Lotus 79 cemented its place as one of the most influential racing cars in F1 history and a defining machine of the late 1970s.
