This 1/48 scale plastic model kit from Hasegawa depicts the Aichi B7A Ryusei Kai, known to the Allies by the reporting name “Grace.” Developed as a carrier-based attack aircraft for the Imperial Japanese Navy, the B7A was designed to combine the roles of torpedo bomber and dive bomber into a single, highly capable platform.

The kit contains 130 parts and captures the sleek lines and distinctive low-mounted wing configuration of this late-war aircraft. Surface detailing is finely engraved, and the model accurately represents the large propeller and streamlined fuselage that gave the Ryusei impressive performance for its class. Once assembled, the completed model measures approximately 240mm in length with a wingspan of 300mm, making it an impressive display piece in 1/48 scale.

History

The Aichi B7A was introduced late in WWII as a modern replacement for earlier Japanese carrier bombers and torpedo aircraft. By combining both attack roles into one design, the Imperial Japanese Navy aimed to streamline operations and improve combat effectiveness.

Although technically advanced and capable of carrying either bombs or a torpedo, the Ryusei entered service when Japan’s carrier force had already been severely reduced. As a result, it saw limited operational use, but it remains one of the most refined and distinctive Japanese naval aircraft of the war’s final years.
