This 1/48 scale plastic model kit from Hasegawa represents the Aichi D3A1 Type 99 Carrier Dive Bomber, known to Allied forces as “Val.” Designed for the Imperial Japanese Navy, the D3A1 became one of the most recognisable carrier-based aircraft of the early Pacific War.

The kit contains 119 parts and accurately captures the aircraft’s distinctive fixed undercarriage with spatted wheels, low-mounted gull wings, and streamlined fuselage. Fine engraved panel lines and carefully moulded components allow for a detailed representation of this important dive bomber. Once assembled, the model measures approximately 213mm in length with a wingspan of 299mm, making it an impressive addition to any 1/48 scale collection.

History

Development of the aircraft began in 1936 when the Japanese Navy requested prototypes for a new carrier-based bomber. Aichi and Nakajima continued the competition after Mitsubishi withdrew, with Aichi’s design ultimately being selected.

Officially adopted in 1939 as the Type 99 Carrier-Based Bomber Model 11, the D3A1 achieved notable success during the early stages of WWII. It played a key role in major naval engagements and was known for its high bombing accuracy, helping to shape the course of early Pacific air operations.
