History

The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter first entered service in the late 1950s as a high-performance interceptor capable of exceeding Mach 2. Developed by Clarence “Kelly” Johnson’s Skunk Works team, its minimalist design focused on speed, climb rate and high-altitude interception. The F-104G became the principal NATO version, serving with countries including Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and Canada, while the improved F-104S was produced for the Italian Air Force with enhanced radar and missile capability. Despite its demanding handling characteristics, the Starfighter remained in frontline service for decades and became one of the most widely operated Western combat aircraft of the Cold War.
