History

The Air Development and Test Wing (A.D.T.W.) of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force is responsible for evaluating new aircraft, systems and equipment before they enter operational service. Based at Gifu Air Base, the unit regularly applies spectacular commemorative markings to celebrate important milestones. In 2025, Aircraft 942 received a striking special scheme to mark the wing’s 70th Anniversary, highlighting seven decades of Japanese aerospace development and flight testing. The F-15J Eagle continues to play a vital role within the unit, supporting the evaluation of new avionics, weapons and upgrade programmes that keep Japan’s air defence capability at the forefront of modern military aviation.
