History

The Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II is the Short Take-Off and Vertical Landing variant of the Joint Strike Fighter programme, developed for the United States Marine Corps, Royal Navy, Royal Air Force and other allied nations. Equipped with an innovative shaft-driven lift fan and rotating engine exhaust nozzle, the F-35B can operate from amphibious assault ships and short, unprepared runways while retaining full supersonic performance. Combining advanced stealth characteristics, sensor fusion and networked warfare capabilities, the aircraft is capable of conducting air superiority, precision strike, reconnaissance and close air support missions. Entering operational service in 2015, the F-35B has become a cornerstone of modern expeditionary air power.
