History
The F-4EJ Kai was the final and most advanced version of the Phantom II operated by the Japan Air Self-Defence Force. Introduced during the late 1980s, the Kai upgrade programme modernised existing F-4EJ aircraft with advanced radar, navigation systems, mission computers and improved electronic warfare equipment, extending their operational life well into the 21st century. Primarily tasked with air defence and interception, the F-4EJ Kai remained one of Japan’s frontline fighters until its retirement in 2021, marking the end of more than five decades of Phantom service in Japan. Its distinctive appearance and long operational history have made it a favourite subject among military aviation enthusiasts.
