History

The Vought F-8 Crusader entered service with the United States Navy in the late 1950s as a high-performance supersonic fighter designed to operate from aircraft carriers. Armed with four 20mm cannon as its primary weapon, it became known as the “Last of the Gunfighters” despite also carrying guided missiles. The improved F-8J variant introduced upgraded avionics, strengthened landing gear and wing modifications that enhanced carrier operations. Crusaders served extensively during the Vietnam War, where they achieved an impressive air-to-air combat record while also undertaking reconnaissance and ground attack missions. The type remained in frontline U.S. Navy service until the mid-1970s before continuing with reserve units and several overseas operators.
