Hasegawa AV-8B Harrier II Plus Ace of Spades (1/48) HAPT28

The Hasegawa AV-8B Harrier II Plus Ace of Spades is a highly detailed 1/48 scale plastic model kit of the iconic vertical and short take-off and landing (V/STOL) attack aircraft operated by the United States Marine Corps. This release features the distinctive markings of Marine Attack Squadron 231 (VMA-231), better known as the Ace of Spades, one of the Corps’ longest-serving Harrier squadrons.

Containing 166 precision-moulded parts, the completed model measures approximately 307mm in length with a wingspan of 195mm. Hasegawa accurately captures the complex shape of the Harrier II Plus with finely engraved panel lines, detailed cockpit, realistic undercarriage and sharply moulded airframe components. The kit also includes an impressive selection of external stores, including a centreline drop tank, AIM-9L Sidewinder missiles, a 25mm GAU-12 cannon pod and the modern Litening II targeting pod.

The included decal sheet provides markings for several aircraft, including the commander’s aircraft, “CG01”, from VMA-231. Combined with Hasegawa’s renowned engineering and excellent fit, this kit offers an enjoyable project for aircraft modellers and produces an impressive display model of one of the world’s most versatile combat aircraft.

History

The McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II Plus is an advanced development of the famous Harrier family, combining vertical and short take-off capability with modern avionics, radar and precision-guided weapons. Operated by the United States Marine Corps, the AV-8B Plus has served in conflicts including the Gulf War, Iraq and Afghanistan, providing close air support, battlefield interdiction and reconnaissance. Marine Attack Squadron 231, known as the Ace of Spades, has operated the Harrier extensively and is one of the Corps’ oldest aviation units. The aircraft’s ability to operate from amphibious assault ships and austere forward bases continues to make it one of the most versatile combat aircraft in modern military aviation.
