History
The Kugisho P1Y1 Ginga was developed by the Yokosuka Naval Air Technical Arsenal as a fast land-based bomber for the Imperial Japanese Navy. Entering service in 1944, the aircraft was intended to combine high speed, long range, and heavy bomb load, allowing it to operate with greater survivability than earlier bomber designs.
Powered by two Nakajima Homare engines, the Ginga was capable of impressive performance on paper, though engine reliability issues limited its full potential in service. Despite these challenges, the aircraft saw operational use in bombing, reconnaissance, and later night-fighter roles as Japan’s strategic situation deteriorated. The P1Y1 stands as an example of late-war Japanese aircraft design, reflecting both technical ambition and the pressures faced by Japan’s aviation industry during the final years of the conflict.
