History

The Mitsubishi F-2 was developed as a joint programme between Japan and the United States, intended to replace older strike and air defence aircraft in Japanese service. While based loosely on the F-16, the F-2 incorporated significant changes, including a larger wing, increased use of composite materials and Japanese-developed avionics.

Entering service with the Japan Air Self-Defense Force in the early 2000s, the F-2 was optimised for maritime strike and air defence roles, reflecting Japan’s specific operational requirements. Though produced in relatively small numbers, it represents a distinct branch of modern fighter development, blending proven concepts with local innovation and marking an important step in Japan’s domestic aerospace capability.
