History

The Karl-Gerät heavy siege mortar was developed in the late 1930s by Rheinmetall for the German army. Designed to fire enormous 54cm shells, the weapon was intended to destroy heavily fortified structures that conventional artillery could not easily penetrate.

These massive self propelled mortars were used during several major operations of the Second World War, including the siege of Sevastopol and the Warsaw Uprising. Due to the size of the ammunition, specialised vehicles such as the Munitionspanzer IV were required to transport and load the mortar shells during combat operations.
