The Hasegawa USS Shamrock Bay CVE-84 is a detailed 1/350 scale plastic model kit of the Casablanca-class escort carrier that served with the United States Navy during the closing stages of the Second World War. This substantial naval model captures the compact flight deck, island structure and distinctive hull shape of the ships that provided vital air support to Allied operations across the Pacific.

The completed model measures approximately 447mm long and 94mm wide, giving the finished carrier an impressive presence while still remaining manageable for display. A dedicated masking template is included to assist with painting the camouflage pattern carried along the hull sides, making it easier to reproduce the ship’s complex wartime appearance accurately.

The kit also includes six Grumman F4F Wildcat fighters and three Grumman TBF Avenger aircraft. Their wings can be assembled either extended for flight operations or folded to recreate the tightly packed appearance of aircraft parked on an escort carrier deck. This provides plenty of scope for creating a busy and convincing naval aviation display.

History

USS Shamrock Bay was a Casablanca-class escort carrier commissioned into the United States Navy in 1944. Escort carriers were smaller and less heavily protected than fleet carriers, but they played a crucial role by transporting aircraft, protecting convoys and providing close air support during amphibious operations. USS Shamrock Bay served in the Pacific and supported operations around the Philippines, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Her aircraft flew anti-submarine patrols, combat air patrols and ground-support missions, helping protect Allied ships and troops during some of the final campaigns of the Second World War.
