Hasegawa Plastic Model Kit
1985 Yamaha TZR250 (1KT)
This 1/12 scale kit from Hasegawa recreates the original Yamaha TZR250 (1KT), a landmark machine from the mid-1980s that brought race-inspired engineering to the road. Developed alongside Yamaha’s TZ250 race bike, the model captures the sharp lines and lightweight construction that defined this early racer replica, including its distinctive aluminium Delta box frame and compact two-stroke layout.
The kit has been carefully researched to reflect the real motorcycle, with the option to display the model with the cowl removed to showcase the engine and internal components. A mix of moulded and plated parts enhances realism, with crisp detailing across the frame, engine and bodywork. The inclusion of clear and plated elements helps bring out the finer features, particularly around the lighting and mirrors.

History:
Released in 1985, the Yamaha TZR250 (1KT) marked the beginning of a new era for lightweight sport motorcycles. Designed as a road-going counterpart to Yamaha’s TZ250 Grand Prix racer, it introduced advanced features such as the aluminium Delta box frame and a high-performance two-stroke engine using a crankcase reed valve system. This combination delivered both strong performance and accessible handling.
The success of the TZR250 helped establish the “racer replica” concept, where production bikes closely mirrored their competition counterparts in both design and engineering. Its balance of speed, agility and usability made it hugely popular, setting the tone for a generation of similar machines from Japanese manufacturers and leaving a lasting impact on sports bike development.
