IBG Models Supermarine Spitfire PR Type G – Playing With Death (1/72) 72600
The IBG Models Supermarine Spitfire PR Type G – Playing With Death is a 1/72 scale model kit depicting one of the lesser-known but historically important reconnaissance variants of the legendary Spitfire. While the Spitfire is best remembered as a fighter aircraft, numerous specialised reconnaissance versions were developed to gather intelligence over enemy territory, often flying alone and unarmed deep behind enemy lines.
The PR Type G was created by modifying standard fighter airframes for photographic reconnaissance duties. Additional cameras were installed within the fuselage while armament was reduced or removed entirely to save weight and improve performance. These aircraft relied on speed, altitude and skilled flying rather than weapons for survival.
Reconnaissance Spitfires played a vital role throughout the Second World War, providing detailed photographic intelligence used for operational planning, target assessment and battlefield analysis. The information gathered by these aircraft contributed significantly to Allied decision-making and military operations across multiple theatres.
This IBG Models kit captures the distinctive appearance of the PR Type G and offers an excellent subject for modellers interested in reconnaissance aviation and unusual Spitfire variants. The aircraft’s clean lines and specialised role make it a unique addition to any collection of WWII aircraft.

History
During the Second World War, accurate intelligence became increasingly important for military planning and operational success. To meet this need, the Royal Air Force developed a series of photographic reconnaissance Spitfires capable of penetrating enemy airspace and returning with valuable imagery of military installations, airfields, shipping and troop movements.
The PR Type G was among the early reconnaissance variants adapted from standard fighter aircraft. Cameras replaced weapons and ammunition, while performance improvements enabled these aircraft to operate at high speed and altitude. Pilots undertaking reconnaissance missions often flew alone without escort, facing significant risks as they crossed hostile territory in search of critical intelligence.
The title “Playing With Death” reflects the dangerous nature of these operations. Reconnaissance pilots frequently relied on their flying skill and the performance of their aircraft to evade enemy fighters and anti-aircraft defences. Despite these hazards, photographic reconnaissance Spitfires made a vital contribution to Allied victory and remain among the most fascinating variants of the famous aircraft.
This model kit requires assembly and painting. Glue, paints and tools are not included and must be purchased separately.
