ICM Plastic Model Kit
ICM Bronco OV-10 NOGS, U.S. Attack Aircraft (1/48) 48306
This 1/48 scale model kit represents the YOV-10D NOGS, a rare and heavily modified variant of the OV-10A Bronco developed under the Night Observation Gunship System (NOGS) programme. In 1970, two OV-10A aircraft were converted to assess their capability for night operations, receiving an extended nose with a forward-looking infrared system (FLIR) and laser rangefinder, as well as a distinctive under-fuselage turret housing a 20mm M197 three-barrel cannon. The result was a uniquely adapted aircraft for nighttime combat and close air support.
The YOV-10D aircraft were tested at China Lake and later deployed to Vietnam in 1971 with VAL-4 “Black Ponies,” where they flew 207 successful night missions and demonstrated outstanding combat capability. This model captures the highly specialised geometry and equipment of the NOGS configuration, offering modellers a rare chance to build a Vietnam-era prototype with significant historical value.

History:
The YOV-10D NOGS programme marked a unique chapter in the evolution of airborne night operations. By combining thermal imaging, laser targeting, and powerful rotary cannon firepower, the aircraft provided VAL-4 with enhanced strike capabilities in low-visibility conditions. With just two prototypes ever flown, the YOV-10D remains a rare and fascinating example of Cold War-era innovation driven by the demands of unconventional warfare in Vietnam.
