ICM Plastic Model Kit

Do 217M-1 German Bomber (1/48) 48274

The ICM 48274 kit recreates the Dornier Do 217M-1, a Luftwaffe medium bomber variant adapted in 1943 when BMW 801D engines were redirected for fighter production. To maintain bomber strength, Dornier engineers redesigned the Do 217K-1 airframe to house DB 603A engines, giving the aircraft improved top speed while retaining its bomb load and defensive armament. This 1/48 scale kit captures the distinctive lines of this late-war German bomber with precision and authenticity.

  • 1/48 scale plastic model kit
  • Features DB 603A engines with four-bladed propellers
  • Detailed glazed cockpit and crew positions
  • Accurate reproduction of airframe geometry
  • Includes various bomb loadouts
  • Decals and colour schemes for four marking options
  • 204 parts, length: 366 mm, wingspan: 399 mm

Note: This model kit requires assembly and painting. Glue, paints and tools are not included and must be purchased separately.

History:

The Dornier Do 217 was one of the Luftwaffe’s most versatile bombers, capable of fulfilling roles ranging from level bombing to reconnaissance and maritime strike. The Do 217M-1 emerged in 1943 as an adaptation to engine shortages, swapping BMW 801D radials for Daimler-Benz DB 603A liquid-cooled engines. These engines boosted the aircraft’s speed to 557 km/h but slightly reduced its range. Otherwise, the bomber retained the payload and defensive layout of the Do 217K, with heavy armament and substantial bomb capacity. The Do 217M-1 operated with German bomber and reconnaissance units until the end of WWII, serving on both the Western and Eastern Fronts. Though overshadowed by the Ju 88 and He 111, the Do 217M-1 demonstrated Dornier’s ability to adapt designs under wartime pressure and contributed to the Luftwaffe’s sustained bomber capability into the final years of the conflict.
