The ICM Last Marauder B-26 Marauder kit recreates one of the most historically significant aircraft produced during the final months of the Second World War. Representing the last B-26G Marauder ever built, serial number 44-68254, this detailed 1/48 scale model captures the aircraft known as “Tail End Charlie”, a fitting nickname for the final example of a bomber that played a major role in Allied air operations throughout the war.

The Martin B-26 Marauder earned a reputation as one of the most effective medium bombers of the conflict. Although early variants faced development challenges, continuous improvements transformed the aircraft into a reliable and highly successful combat platform. Fast, durable and heavily armed, the Marauder served extensively in Europe and the Mediterranean, conducting tactical bombing missions against bridges, railways, airfields and strategic targets.

This kit depicts the late-production B-26G variant and accurately reproduces the distinctive features of the final aircraft manufactured. The model benefits from detailed engineering throughout, including a highly detailed cockpit, internal equipment and accurately reproduced fuselage structures. The geometry and proportions of the original aircraft have been faithfully captured, creating an impressive replica of this historic bomber.

Containing 380 parts, the completed model measures approximately 387mm in length with a wingspan of 453mm. A dedicated decal sheet is included for “Tail End Charlie” as it appeared at Middle River, Baltimore, Maryland, in April 1945.

History

In April 1945, as the war in Europe approached its conclusion, the final Martin B-26 Marauder rolled off the production line at the company’s factory in Middle River, Maryland. Designated B-26G-25-MA serial number 44-68254, the aircraft was given the symbolic name “Tail End Charlie”, reflecting its status as the last aircraft in a production run that totalled 5,266 Marauders.

The aircraft’s first flight took place on 18 April 1945 with test pilot Pat Tibbs at the controls. Joining him was chief designer Ken Abel, who had also participated in the maiden flight of the first production B-26 five years earlier. This unique connection linked the beginning and end of one of America’s most successful bomber programmes.

Unlike many Marauders, Tail End Charlie never saw combat. Following Germany’s surrender in May 1945, the aircraft was transferred to the French Air Force and assigned to the CEAM Test Centre at Mont-de-Marsan. It served in evaluation and transport roles until being retired in 1949. Today, the aircraft remains a symbolic reminder of the end of Marauder production and the conclusion of a remarkable chapter in aviation history.
