The ICM Wehrmacht Light Armoured Vehicles Set is a comprehensive 1/72 scale collection featuring four important German armoured reconnaissance and communications vehicles used throughout the Second World War. Based on the reliable Horch Einheitsfahrgestell chassis, these vehicles formed the backbone of German reconnaissance units and communications networks across multiple theatres of war.

The set includes four distinct vehicle types: the Sd.Kfz.222 reconnaissance armoured car, the Sd.Kfz.223 radio-equipped reconnaissance vehicle, and the specialised Sd.Kfz.260 and Sd.Kfz.261 armoured communications vehicles. Together, these vehicles represent the evolution of German battlefield reconnaissance and command systems during the conflict.

The Sd.Kfz.222 was armed with a 20mm automatic cannon and machine gun, making it one of the most recognisable German armoured cars of the war. The Sd.Kfz.223 featured additional communications equipment and its distinctive frame antenna, allowing reconnaissance units to maintain contact with headquarters. The Sd.Kfz.260 and Sd.Kfz.261 were developed as dedicated communications vehicles, replacing turret armament with advanced radio installations and additional crew space.

History

During the mid-1930s, the German Army sought to replace its earlier armoured reconnaissance vehicles with a new generation of more capable designs. The result was a family of light armoured cars built on the standardised Horch Einheitsfahrgestell chassis. Featuring four-wheel drive, independent suspension and a rear-mounted engine, these vehicles offered excellent mobility and reliability.

The Sd.Kfz.222 became the most numerous variant, serving as a fast reconnaissance vehicle capable of engaging lightly armoured targets and infantry. The Sd.Kfz.223 added enhanced communications equipment, while the Sd.Kfz.260 and Sd.Kfz.261 were developed specifically for command and radio communication duties. These vehicles enabled German reconnaissance formations to relay battlefield information quickly and efficiently across large distances.

Used on every major front from the invasion of Poland through to the final months of the war, these light armoured vehicles played a vital role in German military operations. Their combination of mobility, reliability and versatility ensured they remained in service until 1945.
