History
The B-26 Marauder was originally developed as a fast twin-engine bomber for the US Army Air Forces. By 1943, the British Air Ministry had arranged for deliveries of 200 aircraft to bolster RAF and SAAF capabilities. These aircraft, designated Marauder Mk.III, were based on the American B-26F, which incorporated major wing modifications and updated fuel system ventilation. Once delivered, they were assigned to RAF squadrons such as the 14th and 39th, while the South African Air Force employed them extensively in the Mediterranean theatre. SAAF units, including the 12th, 21st, 24th, 25th, and 30th squadrons, played a key role in supporting the Allied landings in Italy. The Marauder proved to be a reliable and effective medium bomber, delivering precision strikes against enemy positions and supply lines, and securing its place as a vital asset in Allied operations.
