This impressive large-scale kit recreates the Sikorsky S-64E Skycrane, a powerful and adaptable heavy-lift helicopter originally derived from the CH-54 military series. Designed for demanding tasks such as construction, installation work, and the transport of oversized loads, the Skycrane remains one of the most distinctive rotary-wing aircraft in civilian service. ICM’s tooling captures the unique structure of the airframe, from its exposed framework to the characteristic twin-engine layout and extended landing gear arrangement.

The kit includes a universal transport pod based on the original military containers designed for the CH-54. These units, each built with windows, doors, and a rear loading ramp, were originally intended to move light vehicles, equipment, and even troops for parachute deployment. Only 22 were manufactured, all with individual registration numbers, and many now serve in bright orange civilian schemes. ICM provides the option to build the container with doors and ramp open, adding visual interest and display flexibility. With over 600 parts, this is a detailed, engineering-rich model suitable for a striking centrepiece build.

The S-64E Skycrane traces its origins to the CH-54 Tarhe, a heavy-lift helicopter developed for the United States Army during the 1960s. With its minimal fuselage and exceptional lifting power, the design proved ideal for transporting equipment, artillery, and specialised cargo containers built to expand its operational use. After military service, many airframes were adapted for civilian roles and repainted in the vivid orange colours associated with heavy construction and firefighting operations. The flexibility of the universal pod concept, originally created for military logistics and airborne deployment, has allowed the Skycrane to remain an invaluable asset for tasks requiring precision lifting and rapid load placement. Today, the aircraft continues to serve worldwide, demonstrating the enduring practicality of this unconventional but highly effective design.
