The ICM Sikorsky S-64E Skycrane Firefighting Helicopter is an impressive 1/35 scale model kit of one of the most capable aerial firefighting aircraft ever operated. Originally developed as a heavy-lift helicopter, the S-64E Skycrane has earned an outstanding reputation for its ability to transport large loads, support construction projects, conduct rescue operations and combat major wildfires around the world.

This kit represents the specialised firefighting version fitted with a large aerial suppression tank system. Designed to deliver vast quantities of water or fire retardant directly onto active fire zones, the aircraft has become an essential asset for firefighting agencies operating in some of the world’s most challenging environments. The distinctive open-frame fuselage and powerful lifting capability make the Skycrane instantly recognisable among rotary-wing aircraft.

ICM has accurately reproduced both the helicopter and its firefighting equipment in large 1/35 scale. The specialised water tank, fuselage structure, landing gear and transmission assemblies are all highly detailed. The kit captures the unique engineering of the Skycrane while providing a striking display model with exceptional visual presence.

Containing 559 parts, the finished model measures approximately 775mm in length and 225mm in width. The large scale allows extensive detail throughout the airframe and offers excellent opportunities for painting and weathering. Decals are included for several well-known operational firefighting helicopters, including aircraft known as “Georgia Peach” and “Delilah”.

History

The Sikorsky S-64 Skycrane was developed during the 1960s as a heavy-lift helicopter capable of transporting oversized cargo that conventional helicopters could not carry. Its unusual open-frame design reduced weight while allowing large external loads to be carried beneath the aircraft. This made the Skycrane invaluable for construction projects, utility work, logging operations and military support missions.

As wildfires became an increasing challenge in many regions, operators adapted the S-64E into a specialised firefighting platform. Equipped with a large water tank capable of holding approximately 10,000 litres, the helicopter could rapidly deliver water or fire retardant directly onto active fires. Advanced discharge systems allowed crews to precisely control water drops depending on terrain, weather conditions and fire behaviour.

The type has served extensively in the United States, Australia, Italy, Greece, Turkey and South Korea. Some aircraft achieved celebrity status, including the Australian-operated “Eric The Water Bomber”. Today, the Skycrane remains one of the most effective aerial firefighting helicopters in service and continues to play a vital role in protecting communities and natural environments from major wildfires.
