ICM UH-60A Black Hawk with ESSS & Skis (1/48) 48368

The ICM UH-60A Black Hawk with ESSS and Skis is a detailed 1/48 scale plastic model kit depicting the American multirole helicopter in a specialised extended-range configuration. The model features the External Stores Support System, auxiliary fuel tanks and ski landing gear designed for operations in demanding environments.

The ESSS installation comprises dedicated pylons attached to the fuselage, allowing external fuel tanks to be carried. The helicopter may be assembled with or without the ESSS components, providing a choice of external configurations. Specially modified landing gear struts are included without the cable cutters fitted to helicopters using standard wheeled landing gear.

The interior features detailed cockpit equipment and a configurable troop compartment. Cabin seating is supplied but may be installed or omitted according to the chosen layout. Two marking options represent UH-60A Black Hawks operated by the Kentucky and Montana National Guard.

History

The UH-60 Black Hawk prototype made its first flight on 17 October 1974, and the helicopter officially entered United States Army service with the 101st Airborne Division in 1979. It subsequently became a principal multirole helicopter for the US Army and numerous armed forces around the world.

The Black Hawk made its combat debut in Grenada in 1983, where it demonstrated its ability to continue flying after sustaining substantial damage. For extended-range operations, the External Stores Support System allows the helicopter to carry external fuel tanks with capacities of 230 or 450 gallons. This configuration can increase its one-way ferry range to approximately 2,132 kilometres.

The fibreglass skis improve the helicopter’s ability to land on deep snow and soft tundra terrain. Openings in the skis allow the wheels to contact the ground for taxiing on paved surfaces. This specialised configuration is associated with selected United States National Guard units operating in harsh environmental conditions.
