ICM Plastic Model Kit

Vietnam M8A1 U.S. Landing Mat (1/72) 72216

The ICM 72216 kit recreates the M8A1 steel landing mats widely used by U.S. Army engineer units during the Vietnam War. Designed for quick deployment, these corrugated mats allowed rapid construction of temporary airstrips and helicopter landing zones in rugged terrain. This 1/72 scale set provides highly detailed panels that can be configured in different layouts, making it perfect for diorama builders and modellers looking to display Vietnam-era helicopters and light aircraft in realistic settings.

  • 1/72 scale plastic model kit
  • Includes replicas of M8A1 steel landing mats
  • Mats can be arranged in staggered or straight formations
  • Suitable for dioramas and as a display base for aircraft or helicopters
  • 6 parts, length: 205 mm, width: 188 mm

Note: This model kit requires assembly and painting. Glue, paints and tools are not included and must be purchased separately.

History:

During the Vietnam War, the U.S. Army faced the challenge of operating aircraft in remote and inhospitable terrain. To overcome this, engineer units employed portable surfacing systems such as the M8A1 landing mat. Each mat, measuring 3,660 x 560 mm, featured a corrugated steel design that provided durability and efficient drainage, even in tropical conditions. These mats could be installed rapidly in staggered or straight-row configurations, allowing the creation of makeshift airstrips of varying lengths. They became a common sight at forward operating bases, supporting combat helicopters, observation planes, and light attack aircraft. The M8A1 system significantly enhanced the mobility of U.S. forces, enabling air support and supply operations in areas where traditional airfield construction was impossible.
