Italeri Dornier Do 217 J1/J2 Nachtjäger (1/72) 91266
The Italeri Dornier Do 217 J1/J2 Nachtjäger is a 1/72 scale plastic model kit of the heavily armed German night fighter developed during the Second World War. Based on the versatile Do 217 bomber airframe, the J-series was adapted to intercept Allied bombers operating after dark.
The aircraft’s specialised equipment included Lichtenstein radar for locating targets at night. Its offensive armament comprised 20 mm cannons and 7.92 mm machine guns concentrated in the forward nose section. These features gave the Nachtjäger a purposeful appearance that distinguished it from the bomber versions of the Do 217.
The completed model measures approximately 24.5 cm long. A decal sheet provides options for German Luftwaffe and Italian Regia Aeronautica aircraft, allowing the kit to be finished in two different national schemes and displayed as part of a wider collection of wartime night fighters.

History
The Dornier Do 217 was a twin-engine, high-wing aircraft used extensively by the German Luftwaffe during the Second World War. Its adaptable design allowed different versions to undertake conventional bombing, attacks against surface targets and night interception missions.
The Do 217 J1 and J2 variants were developed specifically for the night fighter role as Allied nocturnal bombing operations increased. Lichtenstein airborne radar helped the crew identify and approach targets in darkness, while the concentrated forward armament provided the firepower required to engage heavy bombers.
Although Luftwaffe pilots regarded the Do 217 as less manoeuvrable than some other night fighters, it was considered robust and reliable. The aircraft could reach a maximum speed of approximately 500 km/h. Its endurance, radar equipment and heavy armament enabled it to contribute to Germany’s night air defence campaign, while a small number also served with the Regia Aeronautica.
