History

Between 1808 and 1811, Spanish infantry formed the backbone of the resistance against Napoleon’s invasion during the Peninsular War. Although often lacking the training and equipment of their French opponents, Spanish soldiers fought with determination in numerous battles, including the decisive victory at Bailén and the hard-fought Battle of Talavera. Their disciplined volley fire and steadfast defence played an important role in wearing down French forces alongside British and Portuguese allies. Uniforms varied considerably during this period due to shortages and local supply, giving Spanish armies a distinctive appearance that makes them a fascinating subject for painters, collectors and historical wargamers alike.
