History
The Blue Angels were formed in 1946 by the United States Navy to promote naval aviation and maintain public interest in military flying following the Second World War. Their first display aircraft was the Grumman F6F Hellcat, a carrier-based fighter that had seen extensive wartime service.
Over the decades, the team transitioned through multiple aircraft types as aviation technology evolved. The Blue Angels became internationally recognised for their close-formation flying, precision aerobatics, and high-speed demonstrations.
Today, the team flies the Boeing F/A-18 Hornet, a modern multirole combat aircraft capable of supersonic performance and extreme manoeuvrability. The aircraft’s agility and power make it ideally suited to precision aerobatic displays.
This anniversary set celebrates the long history of the Blue Angels by combining their earliest aircraft with one of their most recognisable modern display jets, highlighting eighty years of naval aviation tradition and aerobatic excellence.
