Revell Aircraft Model Kit

Revell Messerschmitt Me262A-1A/U4 (1/32) 03749

The Revell Messerschmitt Me262A-1A/U4 is a highly detailed 1/32 scale model kit representing one of the most unusual and ambitious variants of the world’s first operational jet fighter. Based on the famous Me262 Schwalbe, this experimental version was developed to carry a massive 50mm MK 214A cannon intended to destroy Allied heavy bombers from long range. The result was a unique aircraft that combined advanced jet propulsion with an exceptionally powerful weapon system.

The most distinctive feature of the U4 variant was its modified nose section. Instead of the standard armament fitted to operational Me262 fighters, the aircraft carried a single 50mm cannon that projected prominently from the nose. This required substantial redesign work and created one of the most recognisable experimental aircraft produced by Germany during the final stages of the Second World War.

This Revell kit incorporates newly tooled components specifically created for the U4 conversion. The redesigned nose section accurately captures the appearance of the prototype while maintaining compatibility with the proven Me262 tooling. With 220 parts, the model offers a rewarding project for experienced modellers seeking a detailed and unusual Luftwaffe aircraft.

Large-scale components allow the aircraft’s elegant lines and advanced engineering to be fully appreciated. The detailed cockpit, realistic landing gear and accurately reproduced Junkers Jumo jet engines provide excellent opportunities for painting, detailing and weathering. Once completed, the model makes an impressive centrepiece for any collection of Second World War aircraft.

History

The Messerschmitt Me262 revolutionised military aviation as the world’s first operational jet-powered fighter aircraft. Entering service in 1944, it offered performance far beyond that of contemporary piston-engined fighters. As Allied bomber formations intensified their attacks on Germany, engineers explored ways to increase the aircraft’s effectiveness against heavily defended bomber streams.

The U4 programme sought to transform the Me262 into a specialised bomber destroyer by installing the powerful 50mm MK 214A cannon. The concept was simple: engage bomber formations from beyond the effective range of defensive machine guns and destroy targets with a small number of hits. Although several prototypes were built and tested, the project never entered full production before the end of the war.

One of the most famous aircraft of this type was “Wilma Jeanne”, which was captured by American forces in 1945. Today, the Me262A-1A/U4 remains one of the most fascinating examples of late-war German aviation experimentation and an iconic symbol of the technological innovation pursued during the final years of the conflict.

This model kit requires assembly and painting. Glue, paints and tools are not included and must be purchased separately.
