The Roden Heinkel He 111 H-16/H-20 (344) is a 1/144 scale plastic model kit of the German twin-engined medium bomber used during WWII. Developed from the earlier He 111 H-6, these variants featured improved armour, updated radio equipment and changes to their bomb-carrying capabilities. The kit includes two Eastern Front marking options: an H-20 of 4./KG 53 from summer 1944 and an H-16 of 2./KG 27 from winter 1942/43. Paint and glue are required.

Roden Heinkel He 111 H-16/H-20 1/144 Model Kit

The Roden Heinkel He 111 H-16/H-20 (344) is a 1/144 scale plastic model kit depicting two later variants of the German twin-engined medium bomber used during the Second World War. The kit includes marking options for aircraft operating on the Eastern Front, covering an H-16 in southern Ukraine during winter 1942/43 and an H-20 in summer 1944.

Developed from the earlier He 111 H-6, the H-16 and H-20 incorporated improvements to armour protection, radio equipment and operational capabilities. These developments helped the He 111 remain in service during the later stages of the war.

Heinkel He 111 H-16 and H-20

The Heinkel He 111 was a German twin-engined medium bomber, with the H-16 and H-20 representing developments introduced during the early 1940s.

Compared with the earlier H-6, these versions featured improved armour protection, the ability to carry different bomb loads, updated radio equipment and a system providing a temporary increase in engine power.

Series production continued during 1943 and 1944. Approximately 1,200 examples of the H-16 were manufactured, alongside around 800 aircraft of the H-20 variant.

Both versions remained operational into the final stages of the Second World War, with examples still in service during early 1945.

Operational Service During WWII

The majority of He 111 H-16 and H-20 aircraft operated on the Eastern Front, although the types also saw service on the Western Front and during the final phase of the North African campaign.

These later He 111 variants were also developed into specialist configurations, including aircraft used for transport duties and glider towing.

The two marking options in this Roden kit concentrate on Eastern Front operations, representing different units, locations and periods of the war.

Two Eastern Front Marking Options

Roden provides markings for two German aircraft:

  • Heinkel He 111 H-20 – Black M: 4./KG 53, Eastern Front, summer 1944.
  • Heinkel He 111 H-16 – Red H: 2./KG 27, southern Ukraine, Eastern Front, winter 1942/43.

These options allow the modeller to represent either the H-16 or H-20 during its wartime service. The different dates and locations also provide a choice between two distinct Eastern Front subjects.

1/144 Scale Plastic Model Kit

Produced by Roden, this plastic model kit depicts the Heinkel He 111 in 1/144 scale.

The model is suited to collections of German WWII aircraft, particularly those concentrating on medium bombers and the aircraft used during the later stages of the Eastern Front campaign.

Its 1/144 scale also allows the completed Heinkel to be displayed alongside other 1/144 scale model aircraft.
