History

The Sherman VC Firefly was developed by the British Army to give its armoured units the firepower needed to defeat heavy German tanks such as the Panther and Tiger. By refitting the American-built M4A4 Sherman with the British 17-pounder gun, engineers created a powerful tank destroyer capable of penetrating thick enemy armour. Entering service in 1944, Fireflies served in British and Commonwealth units across Northwest Europe and played a vital role during the Normandy campaign and beyond. Easily recognised by its long barrel and rear-mounted radio box, the Firefly remains one of the most iconic Allied tanks of World War II.
