Special Hobby Fairey Albacore Mk.I 1/72 Model Kit

Build the British Fairey Albacore Mk.I with this 1/72 scale aircraft kit from Special Hobby. The Albacore was the last biplane bomber to enter service with the British Fleet Air Arm and was developed to replace the earlier Swordfish. Designed for torpedo attacks, horizontal and dive bombing, and reconnaissance, it became an important British naval aircraft during the Second World War.

The Albacore featured an all-metal fuselage with accommodation for a crew of three beneath a large canopy. It entered service in 1940 and went on to equip sixteen combat squadrons as well as numerous Fleet Air Arm training units.

Fairey Albacore in Fleet Air Arm Service

Operational Albacores served across several theatres, including the North Atlantic, Mediterranean and Indian Ocean. During the Battle of Matapan, Albacores were involved in attacks that sank several Italian ships, while other aircraft operated from Malta. The type remained in service until it was gradually replaced by the Fairey Barracuda from 1944.

The Albacore also served beyond the Fleet Air Arm. RAF aircraft operated in Singapore in December 1941 and later over the English Channel during 1944. The RCAF was the final operator, using Albacores with No. 415 Squadron over the English Channel.
