The Takom M4A1(76W) VVSS Sherman Late Production kit recreates one of the most important Allied tanks of the final stages of the Second World War. Combining the distinctive cast hull of the M4A1 with the improved 76mm gun and safer wet ammunition stowage, this variant represented a significant improvement in both combat effectiveness and crew survivability. It served extensively during the Allied advance across north-west Europe and remained in service long after the war ended.

The M4A1’s cast hull gave the vehicle its characteristic rounded appearance, setting it apart from other Sherman variants. The installation of the more powerful 76mm gun improved anti-armour performance against increasingly capable German tanks, while the introduction of wet ammunition stowage significantly reduced the risk of catastrophic fires following enemy hits. Although later HVSS-equipped Shermans would become more common, the VVSS-equipped M4A1(76W) remained an important battlefield asset throughout 1944 and 1945.

This Takom kit offers a highly detailed representation of the late-production vehicle. The model features moveable suspension units and road wheels, workable tracks and detailed hull and turret components. The inclusion of a metal gun barrel provides a crisp and realistic appearance, while photo-etched parts enhance finer details throughout the build. Hatches may be displayed open or closed, allowing additional flexibility for display and diorama projects.

History

The M4 Sherman became the backbone of Allied armoured forces during the Second World War. By late 1944, combat experience had demonstrated the need for greater firepower, leading to the introduction of the 76mm gun. At the same time, wet ammunition stowage was introduced to improve crew safety by surrounding ammunition racks with liquid-filled jackets designed to reduce the risk of ignition.

The M4A1(76W) VVSS combined these improvements with the familiar Vertical Volute Spring Suspension system. Although the later HVSS suspension offered improved ride quality and mobility, many VVSS-equipped Shermans continued to serve throughout the war. The type saw extensive action across France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, contributing significantly to Allied armoured operations during the final defeat of Nazi Germany.
